GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), is a type of weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery) that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it directly to the small intestine. This procedure alters the digestive system to help patients lose weight by limiting food intake and reducing nutrient absorption.

Benefits

Significant Weight Loss:

Many patients lose 60-80% of their excess weight within the first year.

Improved Health:

Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and joint pain often improve or resolve.

Better Quality of Life:

Increased energy levels, improved mobility, and enhanced self-esteem.

How is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

Anesthesia

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Duration

It typically takes about 2 3 hours, but the time that you will be in the OR will be between 3 4 hrs, after that you will be at recovery room for another period of time.

Method

Laparoscopically, the surgeon makes some small incisions in the abdomen and removes about 75-80% of the stomach. The surgeon divides the stomach into a large portion and a smaller upper portion. The small upper portion, or pouch, is about the size of an egg and can hold about an ounce of food. The small intestine is divided, and the bottom end of the divided small intestine is connected to the newly created small stomach pouch. The top portion of the small intestine (that was connected to the rest of the stomach) is then reattached farther down the small intestine, allowing digestive juices to mix with food.
